The Runners product allows users to run the operations part of CircleCI on their own infrastructure. CircleCI's SaaS engine on customer's compute. My role on this product was lead product designer.
Problem
The existing product was through a CLI function which also required the use of several docs article to implement. When benchmarked against other competitor products it took 3-5x the time to install. Users found it difficult and cumbersome to get started and use.
This new design focuses on bringing the functionality from the CLI into UI in order to make it faster and easier for users to set up runners.
The users of this product were often enterprises who had outgrown our cloud solution or had security needs to run on their own infrastructure.
Process
- Early Design: User flows, process simplification, initial drafts
- Research: Enterprise customer study revealed unique data organization needs
- Card Sort: Dashboard content prioritization
- Design Iteration: Navigation improvements and usability updates
- Testing: 10-person usability study
Solution
Implemented revised design with improved usability and engineering specifications.
Impact
The result from this design was an 8x speed increase in install speed as a result of simplified installation process. Due to the ease of install, customer usage of this feature increased 40%.
